Background

The City Council can't vote on state law, so it passes resolutions formally urging the General Assembly to act — putting the city's weight behind specific bills at the State House. This slate backs expanding subsidized childcare and pre-kindergarten, the Rhode Island Works welfare program, a revision of the state's school-funding formula (the Education Equity and Property Tax Relief Act), and adopting ranked-choice voting, among others — priorities decided at the state level that nonetheless shape Providence's budget and its residents' daily lives.
